Abstract.

A total of 37 purple coneflower {Echinacea species) plant samples were collected from

Echinacea growers in Alberta, Canada. These samples included leaf and/or root tissues to test

species identity by DNA fingerprinting and chemical testing. The results from both the DNA and

chemical testing were incorporated to confirm species identity.

In the chemical testing, crushed dried root samples were subjected to a series of chemical

treatments and then analyzed by High Performance Liquid Chromotography (HPLC). Analyses

are based on signals identified by retention time for active compounds such as caftaric acid,

chlorogenic acid, cynarin, cichoric acid and echinacoside. Based on cichoric acid content each

sample was found authentic Echinacea angustifolia.
