You can usually ease the pain yourself. But see a GP if the pain does not improve.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"self-care\">How you can ease ankle pain yourself<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you see a GP about ankle pain, they&#8217;ll usually suggest you try these things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>rest and raise your ankle when you can<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>put an ice pack (or bag of frozen peas) wrapped in a towel on your ankle for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>wear wide comfortable shoes with a low heel and soft sole<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>use soft insoles or heel pads in your shoes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/common-health-questions\/accidents-first-aid-and-treatments\/how-do-i-apply-a-bandage\/\">wrap a bandage around your ankle<\/a>\u00a0to support it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>try regular gentle stretching exercises<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>use painkillers such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/medicines\/paracetamol-for-adults\/\">paracetamol<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/medicines\/ibuprofen-for-adults\/how-and-when-to-take-ibuprofen\/\">ibuprofen gel<\/a>\u00a0(or ibuprofen tablets if needed)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>do not walk or stand for long periods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>do not wear high heels or tight pointy shoes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A pharmacist can help with ankle pain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can ask a pharmacist about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the best painkiller to take<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>insoles and pads for your shoes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>if you need to see a GP<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/service-search\/pharmacy\/find-a-pharmacy\">Find a pharmacy<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Information:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a Physiotherapy website<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Non-urgent advice:See a GP if:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ankle pain is stopping you doing normal activities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the pain is getting worse or keeps coming back<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the pain has not improved after treating it at home for 2 weeks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you have any tingling or loss of sensation in your foot<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you have diabetes and foot pain \u2013 foot problems can be more serious if you have diabetes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Immediate action required:Go to an urgent treatment centre or A&amp;E if:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>you have severe ankle pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you feel faint, dizzy or sick from the pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your ankle or foot has changed shape or is at an odd angle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you heard a snap, grinding or popping noise at the time of injury<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you are not able to walk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These might be signs of a broken ankle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/service-search\/Urgent-Treatment-Centre\/LocationSearch\/10022\">Find an urgent treatment centre<\/a>What we mean by severe pain<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"causes\">Common causes of ankle pain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ankle pain is often caused by exercising too much or wearing shoes that are too tight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your symptoms might also give you an idea of what&#8217;s causing your ankle pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/sprains-and-strains\/\">Sprained ankle<\/a><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Pain in ankle and heel, pain in calf when standing on tiptoes<\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/tendonitis\/\">Achilles tendonitis<\/a><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Redness and swelling, dull aching pain<\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/bursitis\/\">Bursitis<\/a><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Sudden sharp pain, swelling, a popping or snapping sound during the injury, difficulty walking, ankle at odd angle<\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/broken-ankle\/\">Broken ankle<\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you&#8217;re not sure what&#8217;s causing your ankle pain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not worry if you&#8217;re not sure what the problem is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow the advice on this page and see a GP if the pain does not get
