College of Medicine, Al-Nahrain University discussed a master dissertation on evaluating of selenium levels, thyroid function in blood serum and body mass index with insulin resistance in a sample of individuals by the postgraduate student, Ms. Raghad Saad.
The dissertation aimed at revealing the relation between body mass index and selenium levels in serum in participants with or without insulin resistance and evaluating whether body mass index is affected by selenium, thyroid function and the state of insulin resistance.
The dissertation reviewed that selenium levels are significantly lower in females compared to males and decrease significantly with increasing body mass index in both insulin-resistant and non-insulin-resistant groups, as well as a significant negative relation between selenium and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in people who suffer from insulin resistance.
