Mustansiriyah University’s Master’s Thesis on Improving Design of Heat Sink for Cooling Lithium Battery

College of Engineering, Mustansiriyah University discussed a Ph.D. thesis on improving the design of a small-channel heat sink for cooling a cylindrical lithium-ion battery by the postgraduate student, Mr. Mustafa Awad Khalifa.

The thesis aimed at demonstrating the effectiveness of using a cylindrical lithium-ion battery in improving the design of a channel heat sink according to high performance quality, high capacity and reduced maintenance.

The thesis highlighted preparing four different designs of circular pin fins inside HMCHS channels, including pin fins in the middle of straight channels, semi-cylindrical cavities on the channel walls on one side of each fin arranged in a sequential manner, pin fins in the middle of hybrid channels (wavy / straight) and finally the presence of fins at the concave points of the waves.

The thesis confirmed that lithium-ion batteries have many advantages in terms of high cooling efficiency over rectangular and cylindrical batteries and further improving the thermal performance of the four designs, as well as providing the traditional small cylindrical heat sink with smooth channels.
