University of Kerbala Discussing an M.A Thesis entitled “Speech Acts of Complaining in Selected English Movies”

Analyzing complaint strategies in selected English movies from a socio-pragmatic perspective, College of Education for Humanities/ University of Kerbala, has discussed the M.A thesis which is entitled “A Sociopragmatic Study of Speech Acts of Complaining in Selected English Movies,”
The study, being submitted by Ayat Muhammad Jabbar, focuses on influence of social variables such as power, social distance, and gender on formulation and performance of these acts.
The results shows that social and cultural contexts play a pivotal role in shaping the nature of complaint. Direct strategies in American films have been characterized by economic pressures, while indirect strategies predominated in British films, in line with prevailing social norms. The study also demonstrates that strategy choice is related to variables such as power and social relations.
