The College of Biotechnology, Al-Nahrain University discussed master’s dissertation the genetic relation between the SLC22A12 polymorphism and susceptibility to gouty arthritis in a sample of patients by the postgraduate student, Mr. Ziad Shihab Ahmed.
The dissertation aimed at analyzing the effect of genetic polymorphisms (rs3825018 and rs475688) in the SLC22A12 gene on the risk of gout, a disease associated with elevated blood uric acid levels and the influence of the immune response on its development.
The dissertation of a significant relation between the rs3825018 polymorphism and an increased risk of gout, A allele was more common among patients than among healthy individuals, with the GG genotype absent among patients and significantly higher levels of uric acid and immune cytokines were also recorded, highlighting their role in the development of the disease.
