University of Kerbala Discussing an M.A Thesis entitled “A Critical Discourse Study of White Supremacy in Selected Hollywood Films”

Tackling dogma of racism, College of Education for Humanities, University of Kerbala has discussed the M.A thesis which is entitled “A Critical Discourse Study of White Supremacy in Selected Hollywood Films”
The importance of this study, which has been presented by Hawraa Adhab Jiyad, lies in analyzing hidden ideology in Hollywood film discourse, highlighting how concepts of racial dominance and white supremacy are reproduced within entertainment media. This is an area that has not received sufficient attention in previous critical studies, making this thesis a new scientific and cognitive contribution to field of linguistic and critical studies.
The thesis concludes that these films employ discursive strategies such as repetition, categorization, intertextuality, activation, and occultation to construct an image of “white self” as central, rational, and superior, in contrast to non-white “other,” who is often portrayed as marginalized, passive, or subordinate. It also reveals a clear polarization between “self” and “other,” where “other” embodies a struggle against systemic racial domination.
Furthermore, the findings indicate that these films promote a camouflaged racial agenda through persuasive discourse that grants social legitimacy to the image of “whiteness” and reinforces ideologies associated with white supremacy, presenting white dominance as natural, central, and superior.
