Epidemiological study of breast cancer among women in Karbala between 2011 and2013.governorate

Abstract:
Breast cancer increased progressively among women in Iraq. Multiple environmental factors have been implicated to predispose the population to malignancies. The registered cases of breast cancer at the breast clinic in Al-Hussein teaching hospital in holly Karbala city and in private histopathology laboratories in the city between 2011 and 2013 were investigated through a cross sectional descriptive study, so there to identify the prevalence of breast cancer among females in karbala since study years. A total of 678 patients with palpable breast mass reported, more than one third (245 patient) of them were diagnosed through clinical assessment and ultrasound or mammography and were further sent for confirmatory examination either by Cytological or histopathological examination. . Overall breast cancer cases in 2011, 2012, 2013, were 70, 81 and 94 cases respectively, the mean age was 45± 10 year and more than two thirds (77.5%) reported breast feeding history. Most patients presented late as the histopathological picture on presentation showed that only 15% were at grade I while more than one half (55%) at grade II and about one third (30%) at grade III Additionally, infiltrative ductal carcinoma comprised 71.8% of the total malignant cancer, 20% medullary carcinoma and 9.2 % with other typing of breast cancer..
